As the most magical month of the year jingles into view, the familiar rustle of cardboard doors signals the start of Advent. It’s a tradition rooted in 19th-century Germany, first used to help children mark the days until Christmas. After the Second World War, the custom took firm hold in British homes, and it has since grown into a seasonal staple - part nostalgia, part anticipation, and increasingly, part big business.
Today’s Advent calendars go far beyond the modest paper versions of decades past. The market has exploded into every niche imaginable, from artisan chocolates to luxury cosmetics and even fine wines. At the extreme end of the spectrum sits the world’s most expensive Advent calendar, designed by Debbie Wingham for a Swiss client. Costing a staggering £7.8 million, it outshines even the UK property market - coming in at roughly 27 times the average UK house price of £293,000. It’s a reminder that, in both homes and holidays, there’s always someone willing to take things to another level.
For most households, though, Advent spending is far more grounded. Research shows that almost half of UK consumers (48%) had planned to buy an Advent calendar in 2025. Last year, around a third spent between £5 and £20, while 10% were comfortable paying £20–£50. A smaller but growing share went higher: 4% spent £50–£75, and 3% pushed beyond £75, reflecting a rising appetite for premium, experience-driven treats during the festive season.
Traditions like Advent calendars have a way of holding their value, not in monetary terms, but in sentiment, routine, and the comfort of familiarity. In that respect, they’re not unlike our homes. Whether modest or lavish, both shape how we experience the season. The daily ritual of opening a door, much like coming home each evening, offers a sense of place and continuity that people naturally gravitate towards.
As Christmas approaches, households across the country will once again count down the days with chocolates, trinkets, or something more extravagant. And while a multimillion-pound calendar may be out of reach, the enduring charm of Advent remains accessible to all - a small reminder that even in a fast-changing world, some traditions still anchor us.
